How the A/C Works

Your vehicle’s air conditioning system works using refrigerant that travels between high and low pressure sides. This allows the refrigerant to change physical states. As it circulates through the system, it absorbs heat from the air and dissipates it. It also removes excess moisture, protecting the system and ensuring that the air entering through the vents is cool and dry.

What to Know

It’s best practice to have us inspect and service your car’s air conditioner periodically. A great rule of thumb is to see us each year before the temperatures soar. Between service visits, however, there are signs your system needs attention. The most frequently required repair is a refrigerant recharge. It’s possible for the A/C to lose some of this vital product over time. Even so, your A/C shouldn’t need to be recharged often. If it’s needed more than a few times over the life of the automobile, we’ll need to check for leaks. If the refrigerant is low, you’ll notice that the air conditioner works, but the air isn’t as cool as you’d like it to be. If the A/C powers on but produces no cool air at all, the problem could be a failed compressor. This is the heart of the system, changing the state of the refrigerant by compressing it. If it won’t power on at all, there’s likely an electrical problem. This could be a blown fuse or a broken wire. Beware of wet carpet or fluid puddling under the dash. Typically, this points to a clog that’s allowing moisture to backflow. We’ll need to fix that situation before it causes structural damage to the vehicle. Also see us immediately if you begin noticing a wet, musty scent each time you power on the A/C. That’s a sign of mold or mildew in the system. You don’t want to breathe that in, nor do you want the spores to continue spreading through your interior. Keep your cool through the next heat wave. Visit CDT Automotive for auto A/C repair.
